There are umpteen-bajillionty different things that you probably want to tell your family in the weeks and months after you tell them that you’re a blogger. Things like, “yes, there really is a lot of work involved.” And, “No, I do not want to help you start your blog.” And of course, “No, I do NOT think that you should quit your day job and start blogging.” But before you get into any of that, there is one thing that you should tell your caring, loving family (and friends) about your blog:

Do NOT click on my ads.

In the past few weeks I have heard from more than one blogger that their ad network pulled their ads because of “suspicious activity”. This activity was a well-meaning relative who learned that bloggers make money when people click on ads. So, in order to “help” their blogging sister/daughter/friend, they made sure to go to the blog every day, and click on every. single. ad. It takes them 3 minutes to be “helpful”, and they feel so good for doing it.

While well intentioned, this is wrong on several levels. First, it is stealing. For ads that are paying per click, they are paying the blogger who sent them a referral. A relative clicking away is NOT a genuine referral, and getting paid for that click means the blogger is getting paid for a disingenuous referral.

Second, it can do more harm than good. Ad networks are smart. With a significant percentage of clicks not resulting in further action, they will catch on. Some ad networks might even be able to tell the IP address that the clicks are coming from, and see a higher-than-normal number of clicks coming from a single IP address.

Rather than ask questions, the first response on the part of the Ad Network will be to disable the blogger’s account entirely to protect their ad integrity for their advertisers. Meaning that a well-intentioned relative, instead of boosting the blogger’s income, pulled the entire revenue stream.

The blogger may be able to file a report with the ad network contesting the problem and they may be able to get he ban lifted… or the ban might be permanent. In any case, it is a headache that all bloggers can do without.

So, before some well-meaning co-worker or friend tells your Mother-in-Law how to “help” you with your blogging… make sure that they know that no matter how well-intentioned, illicit clicks don’t do anyone any good.

Today in our Crafterminds Chat, we talked about Google+ Communities. Different than you personal profile in Google+, and your blog’s page in Google+, a community is just that – a community. A meeting place for like-minded individuals who want to share information, ask questions, and communicate around a specific topic. A google+ community is an online campfire. A watercooler. A bar. Your community is what you make it!

You might want to start a Google+ community for your niche. Depending on your topic and your time available, you may want to join an existing community or communities. You don’t have to be the moderator to get a lot out of a community!

If you have a community, add it below. And if you see a community you’d love to join – please do!

Recently, Viv from the V-Spot asked several bloggers an awesome question. How do bloggers foster a loyal following?

First, we have to set an arbitrary number on what a “loyal following” is. For her purposes, Viv put the number at 30%. That is to say a 30% or higher return visitor rate. That means that 70% of your visitors might be people popping over from Pinterest to check out a single tutorial, or people who happened to check their google reader this week… but 30% are people who actively pay attention to what you have to say… and come back for more.

One of the responses was from an amazeballs blogger who asked to remain anonymous. Not because she doesn’t believe everything you’ll read here, but because she does it all so seamlessly and so naturally that if one of her readers saw this, they might think that she was too calculating in her performance. Here is what she said:

WAHOO. Nobody ever asks about this and it’s the only number I really pay much attention to! I’m so glad you asked…I feel so validated. Okay, so, I’m at 35.6 this month. At one point last fall it peaked at 38. I would like to get my average to be around 40 by year end.

1. Every once in a while I will share something personal that has nothing to do with crafts/etc. I started doing it because it was cathartic for me, but I noticed it also builds audience trust and boosts retention. “Share a secret and you will become friends for life” — is an old marketing adage. It works. Of my ten most popular posts last year, five of them had nothing to do with crafts — they were mostly posts like this…personal. Almost confessional.

2. I *always* keep one great/substantive tutorial in the hopper. That way, on occasions when I suddenly see a brief boom of external traffic, I can quickly post something great above the fold. If my new visitors like whatever project lead them in, AND whatever is above the fold, they are far more likely to stick.

3. (Don’t kill me for saying this) — Do NOT respond to every single comment. At least not in public or with some boiler plate copy/paste “thanks!” response. When someone sees that you respond to everyone the same way, they see that they have no chance of feeling special. No connection. What a missed opportunity! Thoughtful comments = thoughtful responses. And if someone has commented a few times, I send them a personal email letting them know how much I appreciate their feedback.

4. Avoid discussing the dynamics of running the blog (unless you want your audience to be exclusive to fellow bloggers). Non-bloggers don’t like hearing how the sausage is made. I am getting ready to post a reader survey soon KNOWING I will take a hit. Sometimes you have to do that though. Speaking of which…

5. This is going to sound crazy to some people: every once in a while, do something that you KNOW some people will not like. Discuss something controversial…or use a curse word…mention religion…whatever. Make it brief and sincere. If there is something you wanted to say but bite your tongue for fear of offending people — THAT might be an opportunity to take a risk and build trust with your audience Separate the wheat from the chaff. This is not for everyone, especially those with a significant amount of ad revenue or sponsors to cater to, but for somebody like me, it’s critical. I know my audience and they know me. That kind of trust allows me a tremendous amount of freedom with my content, which makes blogging more enjoyable and produces an end result I am proud of. That it something I would not trade for anything.

Um… wow. Don’tcha just wish I gave you a link to her blog so that you could give her a bunch of comment love and follow all her on every social media channel ever invented? No wonder she’s got such a loyal following!

Yes, as the title says, I drove straight off the blogging road to bliss and landed in a deep rut on the side of the road. It happened so quickly, I had no time to react. There I was. Stuck. It felt like I lost every creative bone (and brain cell) in my body. I wasn’t sure if it was because I’ve been going 24/7 (almost) with Socks for Sandy since the hurricane hit our town, or because my craft office is beyond chaotic, or what. But my one-year blogiversary was a day-ish away, and I had no motivation whatsoever to post or to create, and no plans for any snazzy giveaways to celebrate, which made me a bit depressed. Like I was failing somehow. Although I was working on new card designs for my Etsy shop, the creativity didn’t translate to my blog, to crafting, or to me in general. Even my husband offered ideas, “What about writing about your garden plans?” but nothing was getting me out of the rut. Over and over in my head was, “I should be happy to reach a year of blogging. What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I craft? Why can’t I write?”

After almost a week of being stuck, I decided to call my version of roadside assistance and asked several of my blogging buddies for advice – my own version of a craft and blog intervention: a bloggervention. All of the awesome suggestions I received are compiled below. Think of this as a road manual to keep handy just in case you ever veer off the Blogging Road to Bliss.

Reach out to other bloggers.

This first suggestion is from me! I can tell you right off the bat that reaching out to other bloggers in your circle is the BEST thing to do. My blogging pals showed up almost immediately to the scene with lots of helpful ideas and encouragement. And another benefit? You’ll hear from others who have either hit that same rut you drove into, or are in a similar rut to yours. There’s power (and safety!) in numbers, and it was actually reassuring for me to realize I wasn’t alone – not that I wish any blogger gets into a rut, but you know what I mean, right?

Don’t be hard on yourself.

Everyone has ebbs and flows with blogging. Go easy on yourself. Give yourself time to unwind and inspiration will strike again! (Malia at Yesterday on Tuesday)

Realize that it’s totally normal to be uninspired at times. I try not to put pressure on myself and just take it as it comes. Unplug (see below) and go back to things that make you happy. It will come back. (Tracie at Cleverly Inspired)

This happens to all of us, especially to creative thinkers who put too much pressure on ourselves to create. Sometimes our minds and bodies just need to get away from what we love, so that we can focus on ourselves and get back to it with a new perspective and a fresh and clear mind…so we could enjoy doing what we love so much! (Barbara at Chase the Star)

Unplug and Recharge.

Get offline. Take a break and do something guilt-free. When I start picking stuff up and fiddling, I’m creating in no time. Then suddenly I have something to blog about. Totally unplanned. But that may not happen either. Just give yourself permission to be OK to not have to blog and it generally all works out. (Donna at Funky Junk Interiors)

Unplugging is key. Take a few days away from the computer and do other stuff you love. No blogging, no Etsy, just reading a book, lunch with a friend, taking a nap, etc. (Sarah at Forced to Cook)

Take some time to recharge by nurturing your spirit doing whatever makes you feel happiest. When your head’s in the right place, it’s likely that your creativity will be energized – not just to get you through a few posts, but for the long haul. (Jennifer at Rook No. 17)

Do something different. Play with your craft supplies.

Doing something new or different, such as playing with a new craft supply/recipe or reading a new book, helps. Even just going to the mall and looking at the displays for inspiration – seeing what’s trending – may inspire you. (Shannon at Madigan Made)

Sometimes sitting down with a boatload of magazines helps me get reinspired. (Tracie at Cleverly Inspired)

The way I get through a funk is to go shopping. Hitting up the dollar store, Target’s dollar spot, going through Target’s seasonal section, and then following that up with a trip to my local craft store always gets me inspired. And I usually end up with a bag or two of new supplies to play with! (Carolina at Always Expect Moore and 30 Minute Crafts)

Sometimes cleaning my craft room helps jog things in the right direction. It’s like a metaphor. When inside my head is a jumble, I organize the outside of my head surroundings and it “unjumbles” my inside. (Lisa at Condo Blues)

Sometimes for me it’s just taking an inventory of my supplies ( my workroom is a total disaster right now). (Carol at The Answer is Chocolate)

Write…or not.

Keep a running list of ideas on your computer. When I hit a rut, I’m able to review that list and work from there. I think its harder for creative bloggers to go through blog PMS because we aren’t just writing about our days. (Jill at Create.Craft.Love.)

Write a post promoting your Etsy shop or online store, your latest products, how you designed them, etc. (Heather at Dollar Store Crafts)

Write a post that you will never publish. Sometimes I write a post about the rut or in my case many posts about how I was feeling after Blitzkrieg [her beloved dog] passed to get the stuff that was running through my brain on paper so to speak. I don’t post them because they were free form, but it helped jog my brain back in the right direction. (Lisa at Condo Blues)

Write a post that you will publish. I go through a bloggy rut at least twice a year. It’s usually because I’m on Pinterest seeing these great fantastical things and it gets me down. Or someone tells me I should go back and rename all my pictures for better SEO. Overwhelming. I love to create but the business side of blogging makes my head hurt. So I step away and usually write a post about it because I like to keep things real. And after awhile, I feel the urge to create. It always comes back, thankfully. (Kimberly at A Girl and a Glue Gun)

I am a big believer that blogging should be an “organic” process. If I don’t feel like writing, I don’t. I take advantages of those moments and days where the words just pour out. I may start 7 blog posts in one day and finish them at different times. Same is true for the creative process: If I’m struck with several ideas in one week, I try to get those creative juices out. It is an ebb and flow and that is what has worked for me so far. (Tracie at Cleverly Inspired)

Do not let blogging control you.

There isn’t any law that says you have to do something big or splashy for your blog’s anniversary. If you aren’t feeling it right now and need to take a little break to recharge it is OK to do it. (Lisa at Condo Blues)

I firmly believe that creators of good, authentic content have readers that would rather have a lapse between solid posts, than to have daily ones that feel forced, rushed, or insincere. (Jennifer at Rook No. 17)

Remember why you wanted to blog and the energy and excitement that led to that. Don’t focus on the obligations you may feel. You are NOT failing! Sometimes it’s a break that ignites the spark again; sometimes it’s taking a day for yourself and doing something totally just for you (which we are all great at not doing, am I right?) Your creative mojo will come back. Never fear. (Carol at The Answer is Chocolate)

In the beginning, I mainly just blogged to keep my family and friends up to speed on what I was doing. I have good times and bad times and I think the advice that Carol Cook gave is right on target: remember why you wanted to blog in the first place and you will eventually get excited about it again. (Lisa at Stuff-n-Such)

So. What worked for me?

A little unplugging, plus being truly OK with not posting until I have something solid to share with my readers, were the suggestions that quickly improved my outlook. Writing this article gave me a jump-start, as did a post about my Etsy shop. I’ve begun organizing my craft supplies and cleaning up my office. I’m breaking the organizing into bite-size sections which has made this monumental task – emphasis on mental – easier and much less overwhelming. You can’t imagine the things I’m finding, and I’m not just talking about supplies: I found a Sephora gift card – almost two years old – that still has $21 on it!

Have you ever hit a blogging rut? Ever been at a loss for what to craft for your blog even though you have been staring crafts on Pinterest for days? Have a tip not included above? Please share your story in the comments.

About me: I think life is definitely too short to hold off pursuing your dreams until “someday” happens. Someday is now. And living your life in the moment should be what everyone strives for. That being said, sometimes I craft and blog in my pajamas. Sometimes my “bed head” hairstyle is literally natural.
I started using Pinterest way back in the beginning, pretty much from the time it began. At that time, it was just a way of keeping track of items I wanted to bookmark from the internet in a cool visual format. Now that I have nearly 2000 followers and have seen the power of Pinterest in terms of driving traffic to my blog, I see it as something that goes beyond that original intent and crosses over into the world of social networking and marketing. What’s more, brands I apply to work with are beginning to ask about Pinterest activity as one of their standard questions. So, now I’m seeing the need for being able to measure and track analytics for Pinterest

Just how do you do that? Pinterest doesn’t have any of their own built-in analytics. You can check Google Analytics to find out the traffic you’re getting from Pinterest but that’s really the extent of it. If you want further details on what kind of reach you have on Pinterest, you’ll need to look elsewhere. I looked at 5 tools specifically made for Pinterest analytics that might help:

1) PinReach: http://www.pinreach.com

What it offers: Pinreach gives you a score based on your Pinterest “popularity” based on such factors as how many followers you have, how many of your pins have been repinned, how many likes and comments you have received. It also provides graphs and stats that allow you to see such things as your popular pin history, popular boards based on repins, which of your boards have a far reach in terms of repins, followers, likes, and comments, shows your most popular pins and the number of repins each has, and tells you who your most influential followers are. It also measures the change in your Pinterest stats since your last update – pins, repins, likes, liked, followers, following, comments, boards in terms of the amount of change +/-. Not only can you check this for yourself but you can check out this information for other members too.

One of my favorite features on PinReach is that it will provide you with information on which pinners have the highest reach, what the most popular pins are, what pins are trending, and what members are trending.

How does all of this help?: By being able to see which of your pins and boards are most popular, you’ll know what kind of content your followers seem to be looking for and you can use this as a guide for future content. Having a look at those with the highest reach or members who are trending and what kinds of things they do on Pinterest as well as most popular and trending pins can give you insight into what appeals to Pinterest users overall and may be helpful in guiding your own Pinterest use and gaining more followers.

2) PinPuff: http://www.pinpuff.com

What it offers: PinPuff gives you basic stats on followers, following, pins, boards, likes, liked, repins and based on this information it assigns you a reach score, activity score, and a virality score. PinPuff assesses each of these scores in terms of whether they are on par with the average, above or below average. Some things that make PinPuff stand out are: a) It offers PinPerks based on your scores (similar to Klout Perks – rewards of discounts, deals and free items that you can receive) b) You can see “pinfluencers” who are interested in certain topic areas c) PinPuff shows your top 20 boards and how many followers, likes, pins, and repins you have for each.

How does all of this help?: You might be rewarded with tangible items based on your Pinterest activity but at this point in time, the PinPerks are not nearly as plentiful as Klout Perks. Insight into your top 20 boards may help you to tailor your content with related or supplementary topics. By seeing other Pinfluencers in topic areas you are also interested in, you may be able to find like-minded people to connect with or gain inspiration from.

3) Repinly: http://www.repinly.com

What it offers: Repinly gives you a pinterest score and ranking based on your following and activity. It also includes graphs and stats showing the most popular categories for pins and for boards on Pinterest in general as well as the average activity of popular pinners such as how many pins, boards, and how many are following. In addition, Repinly lists the top sources for pins, the top 10 pinners, and the most popular boards. Who knew that a board about elephants is #1 with over 3 million followers?

How does all of this help?: Again, knowing what is most popular on Pinterest in terms of pins and boards may give you some necessary background information for your own content and for finding topics that would guide your use of hashtags.

4) Reachli (previously known as Pinerly): http://www.reachli.com

What it offers: This tool is a bit different than the others. Instead of assessing your current use of Pinterest or that of other users, with this, you can add new pins from within Reachli, giving you the ability then to track those particular pins in terms of clicks, likes, and repins.

How does all of this help?: Reachli will keep track of when (day and time) you pinned a particular item, perhaps allowing you over time to find the best time for you to pin in the future. By trying different types of pins, it may give you insight into those that are most effective in terms of grabbing the attention of your followers.

5) Pinalytics: http://pinalytics.co.uk/

What it offers: Pinalytics uses Google Analytics from your site to provide you with stats such as what specific posts have been pinned, by whom, the number of visits originating from that pin, bounces and average time based on visits originating from that pin.

How does all of this help?: By finding your blog posts that are already doing well on Pinterest, you may want to promote these pins/posts further or in different ways to gain even more leverage out of them. They can also help you in choosing related content to promote. Because it tells you who pinned your posts, you’re able to go and thank these people for sharing your content and build community with followers you may not have known you had otherwise.

With Pinterest being such a high source of traffic for many creative blogs, the type of information these various measurement tools provide could be invaluable. Have you started to look at your Pinterest analytics? How have you found it helpful? I’d love to hear about your experiences with these tools or any others you might recommend.

Pinterest. Twitter. Facebook. Google Plus. I’m on them all. I spend time there. But am I being active?

Recently I challenged myself to become more active on my Social Media Channels. This meant actual activity. Not just popping into Facebook, reading my timeline, and commenting in my favorite groups, or hopping on to Twitter to share a link to my recent post. I challenged myself to be active. Here is the list I gave myself:

Facebook:
Post 1-2 page updates per day.
Pinterest:
Pin at least 10 projects from other people each day (repins don’t count)
Repin at least 10 projects I love
Pin at least 2 older posts of mine that haven’t gotten much love
Twitter:
RT, Comment on, or reply to 5 tweets each day
Stumble Upon:
Stumble at least 10 posts from other people each dayGoogle+
Spend 10 minutes going through my stream. +1 anything that I like
Check into the communities I have joined

While I’m out doing these social media activities, I tend to try for more. There is a little personal promotion, but the focus here is to be social. After all, it is social media.

After a week of pushing myself to be actively social on my favorite Social Media Channels, you can see what happened to my stats:

I must ask myself… why didn’t I start this sooner?

Are you keeping active on Social Media?

Google + isn’t new. But many of us haven’t spent much time there. With Twitter becoming increasingly spammy, and Facebook monetizing to the point that only a fraction of our fans see what we have to say, it makes sense to learn about Google+. We’re dedicating the month of February to helping DIY bloggers fall in love with Google+. Here is the hangout schedule for the month:

2/4/2013: Google+ an introduction

2/11/2013: Google+ Hangouts

2/18/2013: Google + Communities

2/25/2013: Integrating Google + into your blog plan

But WAIT! There is MORE! Our regular chats are on Twitter, and we’ll have these chats on Twitter… and Google+! Wait, how are we going to do that? We are going to Twitter chat while simultaneously broadcasting a Hangout On Air! Colleen, our resident Google+ expert, a couple of us Crafterminds, and someone from Google will all be chatting live on Google while we chat on Twitter. It is a Social Media Smorgasboard! You’ll be able to listen, watch, read, and interact all in real time!

We’re super excited about this, and hope you’ll be able to join us!

Whenever I get questions from people about how to make money blogging, I give them the link to Crafterminds to get them started — let them read back over the archives for awhile to get a great overview of how to blog for money. Attending the #crafterminds chat and joining a mastermind group are also great ways to learn. But as for more in-depth information, I recommend making a small investment in craft blogging, perhaps in an online class. Sister Diane of Craftypod has a class coming up: “Monetize Your Craft Blog,” which is very reasonably priced and is designed to take you from zero to a plan for monetization in just a few weeks.

Why I recommend this class: No, I haven’t taken it, but I have looked at the overview which is very well-presented, and more importantly, I know Sister Diane personally and she is generally one of the most thoughtful and methodical craft bloggers out there. She’s organized, intelligent, and a great teacher.

Here’s a quote from someone who has attended the class:

” I would suggest this class to anyone who has been writing a blog for awhile and wonders “What next?”, but also to someone who is interested in starting a business and isn’t sure if blog content would support their marketing efforts.” – Jennifer Greer, Quiltin’ Jenny

Monetize Your Craft Blog is a three-week class that takes place in a private online space. Here’s how it works:

Each week of class, you’ll have a variety of lessons in the form of text, audio, video and downloadable worksheets.

You can get one-on-one help from your teacher via email, and work with your classmates through our class forum and lesson comments.

In addition, we’ll have one live chat session each week of class. These are loose question-and-answer sessions where you can get to know your classmates and share your thoughts. The people you meet in this class can become important contacts later as you’re implementing your money-making plans.
